Good News/Bad News From South Carolina on Sea Turtles
First the bad news. The South Carolina's Aquarium has rescued twice as many turtles in 2015 as they did last year. Some are just sick and others have been hit by a boat. But all have been taken in by the aquarium's rescue program.
The good news? We may be seeing more turtles in trouble because there are more turtles altogether.
“Although it is difficult to say with confidence that we are seeing a recovery in sea turtle populations, it certainly seems that way,” Kelly Thorvalson, the manager of the program, told the Charleston Post & Courier's Bo Petersen.
“Nest numbers are increasing, in-water sightings are increasing and the numbers of sea turtles that need medical attention are definitely increasing.” she added.
